What was your experience like with TBW?
Amazing in so many ways. It’s like a visual form of journaling and an unbelievable tool for self-reflection. It brings deep consideration of how we perceive ourselves, want to be perceived, and imagine others perceive us. It brings the concept of “image” as in one’s persona, reflection, inside reflecting out etc. to a whole new level. There’s also a very playful glamour to the whole thing–like playing dress-up when you’re a kid but then kind of destroying the cliche of self as “object” by choosing the terms, the lens, and the background for which you wish to be perceived. Of course when all is said and done, you’ve already changed and want to do the whole thing all over–but that might just be me.
What was the inspiration for your images?
One hundred bills spread all over my bed, handbags, the interesting anonymity/privacy/sexual/escape elements of bathrooms.
What did you learn about yourself from the experience?
That the archetypes of money, sexuality, and elimination hold a special place in my Scorpionic psyche. And interestingly enough, as much as I loathe having my picture taken, when in total control of all the elements–being the control freak I am—it’s actually wildly fun!
Do you feel you are in the same state of mind as when you started?
I feel it has definitely sparked a new love of abusing the self-timer function on my camera. Wait, that’s not really a mind-set–that’s a camera set.
What advice would you give to those wanting to take their own portraits?
Don’t censor your impulses. Start with exactly where you are right now and go from there. The images will start pouring out. Its an instant obsession and so healing for our self-image as women. Instead of being objectified by the lens of the patriarchy, we are taking our beauty and our inner beasts into our own hands.
Background: I’m a Jungian Psychoanalyst, Astrologer and Bellydancer. If this were a different time and place I would simply describe my vocation as a Priestess, because that’s what all of the healing arts boil down to in the end.
