Fifteen women.
Three portraits each.
They Be We provides an intimate look at the lives of fifteen different women. From mothers, to Voodoo doctors, to those in the limelight, each woman has a story to tell.
Some are sad, some are joyous, all are real.

They Be We encourages women of all ages, races, and places to collaborate with other women while finding a sense of self and pushing their creativity to new levels. Anyone is welcome to join and create her own self-portrait project as well as add to the blog, join the flickr and facebook pages, create a book, and share her vision. About Katelan V. Foisy:
Katelan V. Foisy is a visual artist, spiritual reader, healer, and model based out of NYC.
She studied illustration at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn NY and started her career in the communication arts shortly after graduating in 2001. Her mixed media collages often evoke a gamut of emotion through the rich layers and textural combinations. She is known to use herself as well as her friends in her pieces manipulating faces and bodies to create new characters. This process eventually lead her to create “They Be We” a self portrait project. Her fine art pieces have been displayed at The Worcester Art Museum, Ohio History Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art DC, Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA), Mae West Fest, as well as the A&D gallery in London. Her illustration clients have included, The Grammy Awards, Out magazine, Scholastic, and The Progressive. She is also the art director and one of the creators (with Sherene Schostak) of Constellation Magazine and co-owner of Knickerbocker Circus, an independent publishing company.
About Knickerbocker Circus:
Knickerbocker Circus was founded by KatelanV. Foisy and Emily Poole in Spring 2009 in a café on the Lower East Side. They were joined by editor Drusilla Osborne soon after. Knickerbocker Circus publishes all genres of books and acts as a home base for artist collectives such as They Be We and soon Swimming Cities. It also teaches people how to promote themselves and their work, provides innovative literary projects and performances (starting August 14th), and will be working with zine trades around the world.
This blog will serve as the continuation of the book, with new self-portraits being posted by the women of They Be We, as well as updates on their individual projects. In time, we hope to include information on forming your own self-portrait tribe so that the community will continue to grow and thrive.
